FROM NOW ON, ALL OUTPUT WILL BE ONLINE
as in, I won't be sending any real letters, with the exception of one person...
In the past month or so, as a new pastime, I have been watching and reading a lot of horror. For a good part of the time in between newsletters, I have been really sick. Fortunately, I am much better, and finally caught up with my classes.
That being said, at the moment of writing this, there is literally only about one and a half weeks of school left. I have a couple final exams, a few final papers to write, and then I will have completed my first semester of university.
Below are some movies that I would recommend, I haven't seen very many, but I do really like the genre.
The Mist, the movie not the book, was a solid 6/10. I watched it because a story that I really liked, Whitefall, was heavily inspired by it. That being said, while I did love Whitefall, I wasn't too crazy about The Mist.
I think that the concept is actually great, but the execution in the movie is really underwhelming. Like in the sense that the movie will bring up a lot of good ideas, but then not carry them out as well as I would've hoped. That being said, I did like the ending. I also thought it was funny that a good amount of The Walking Dead cast is in it, and I can only assume that part of their casting in The Walking Dead is because of this movie.
In all honesty, I wouldn't recommend this movie. Not that it is especially bad, but rather it just isn't good. Instead, I would recommend you either read or listen to Whitefall by C.K. Walker.
If the name sounds familiar, it should. C.K. Walker also wrote Borrasca, which is just an incredible story. (I would strongly recommend NOT reading Borrasca if you aren't okay with especially dark or violent themes, especially towards children. It is a very very good read, but super depressing.)
In comparison to The Mist, this movie was incredible, easily an 8/10. I will say, it heavily relies on your knowledge of other horror movies, and I have no knowledge of other horror movies. That being said, I really enjoyed watching this.
It felt like watching Clue, but with a horror twist. For the most part, you really end up liking the characters. I won't say much about this movie, as anything else said would spoil major details. I would really recommend giving this a watch.
Out of all the movies that I mention here, this one is easily the best. I came into it expecting there to be a literal parasite, but wasn't disappointed.
I will say nothing about this movie, other than that you should definitely watch it. Even if you don't like horror, I would still say this is an incredible movie to watch, especially considering it is also a "dark comedy".
I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in a hackathon. For those unaware, a hackathon is a sort of competition where you are given a limited amount of time to make something, usually following a particular set of prompts.
This hackathon was a bit unique in the sense that it also had a hardware section. (Usually hackathons are specific to software.)
The idea that I had for this was to make a sort of "StreetPass" keychain that would allow you to network with people around you in an easier and more fun way.
For those unaware, StreetPass was a feature on the 3DS that would allow you to interface with other 3DS devices that you came across while your device was in sleep mode.
My idea was the following:
I ended up working with another guy, who was super cool. He brought up the idea of just making the idea as an app for a phone, which made more sense since basically everyone already has a phone.
(Additionally, basically all phones within the past ten years have BLE capabilities.)
We ended up working towards a simple application, that more or less functioned exactly as intended, which was super awesome. It was both of our first hackathons, and personally, I feel that I was able to get a lot out of it.
Unfortunately, I don't really have any footage of the software working, as it is still in development. That being said, we would both still love to work on it, and in the summer, I am planning on developing a hardware add-on for badge functionality.
In short, we wanna extend the idea to a "badge" to sell at DEFCON Las Vegas.
As you can tell by my incredible drawing, I have also been reading Uzumaki. Which is an incredible horror manga series by Junji Ito.
It has three volumes, and they all follow the same idea / trope / motif, spirals. Spirals are such a simple concept, but the execution is incredible in these works. I would strongly recommend giving these a read, as the horror, art, and story are all pretty good.
This is by no means a horror manga, but it is something that I've gotten back into. Berserk is an incredible manga, and I doubt anyone will ever disagree with that point.
That being said, I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who has not yet checked it out. It is a tragic story of a dude with a big sword and a bigger curse and an even bigger backstory.
This may surprise you, but the art in the manga is even better than the image above. (It took a great bit of humility to admit that someone can draw better than I, but only because I am so humble and talented of course.)
This is easily the best manga I have ever read, and it will remain that way. There is a reason a complete adaptation of this doesn't exist. It would be impossible to perfectly portray everything in the manga. (My neck beard grew with each word in that sentence...)
I haven't been able to listen to a ton of new music lately, mostly because if I am driving around, I mostly listen to CreepCast, a horror podcast that I strongly recommend.
The only new music that I have really listened to is Sunami, by Sunami. From what I can see online, it is Post-Hardcore and / or Thrash, and I would say thrash is a pretty good way to describe this album.
I first heard of this album because a track from it, Contempt of a Cop, was popular online. In the song, the lead singer vaguely sounds like Charlie Dompler from Smiling Friends.
The entire album is pretty good, and while I would recommend it, I would understand if you don't like it. If you just want a little taste of what the band has to offer, I would really recommend listening to this little compilation.
(It shows off the drums the most, and I really like the drums.)
Unfortunately, not much has happened in the past month, other than me getting sick and having to study a ton to catch up / take exams.
I haven't been able to do very much personal reading, but I was assigned to do a presentation on a philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and I greatly enjoyed learning about him.
I will update the page if / when I decide to do a post about him. I felt that while he definitely isn't a great introduction to philosophy, he is still a very fascinating person, and I believe that there is a lot behind his ideas. (Some of them at least, some of the other ones I really don't like.)
I have also made a sign up thingy for when things are added to this webpage. You COULD just follow me on Neocities, but you could also just enter in your email or whatever, and then I can create a mass email for everyone whenever I put up a new newsletter. (I will sign you up for lots of spam.)
Speaking of Neocities, YOU SHOULD TOTALLY MAKE A WEBSITE AND HOST IT THERE FOR FREE.
Neocities is an online platform that allows you to host your website completely for free. It is super easy to use and ultra beginner friendly. If enough of you guys make websites, we can have a cool webring where we are all chums and whatnot. That would be fun I think.
If you don't know what to make your website about, it can be about literally anything. Like maybe just funny bug drawings you made, or a detailed blog of your rock collection.
For some help / inspiration, I would check out the videos / websites below.
DISCLAIMER - I EITHER HAVEN'T SEEN THESE VIDEOS AT ALL, OR HAVEN'T SEEN THEM FOR A LONG TIME, SO I HAVE NO IDEA HOW POSSIBLY WEIRD OR EXPLICIT THEY MIGHT BE.
For those who haven't ever programmed before, HTML and CSS definitely aren't the best introductions as they do not function as normal programming languages.
(As in they aren't Turing Complete. If something is Turing Complete, that means it can essentially do anything a computer can do. This is how you can "Play Minecraft in Minecraft".)
That being said, HTML and CSS are incredibly forgiving, so long as you are a bit patient. In short, when you use HTML, you are dumping all of your content onto the screen, and it will display it from top to bottom.
With CSS, you can organize all of that stuff, place it however you'd like, and create containers that follow rules that you enter. (Terrible explanation ngl, just watch a video or read some of the stuff I referenced.)
